Datura- dangerous dominatrix of the dark or live-giving trumpet of the angels on high? Behold, one of my most beloved teachers of paradox- the perfumed proxy between realms of life & death, rich with botanical lore, legend, and beyond-medicinal significance- north, south, east, and west!
Riding on the wafts of the wind, Datura species enchant us with a fragrance of eerie attraction. A forbidden fruit extraordinaire, popping up on the liminal edge between this world and another, riding the realms of mystery just as it rides the sidelines of desert arroyos.
Here in 21st century pop culture, our attitudes have been corralled to reject poison in some contexts yet embrace it with gusto in others… And yet, we need not look far to see the traditional use of so-called “poison plants” world-wide for intentional rites of initiation, divination, medical sedation, and soulful edification.
